One in seven people in the UK suffer from hearing loss to some degree, that’s over 7.5 million people, of which 50% are over the age of 60. Studies show that as people lose their hearing, they are more prone to depression; they withdraw socially and communicate less with family and friends. This comes as no surprise – after all, you can’t participate in conversation if you can’t hear what’s being said!

A recent study by a team of researchers at Johns Hopkins University demonstrated a link between hearing loss and brain decline. According to one of the researchers, Dr Frank Lin, becoming socially withdrawn due to hearing loss – such as not going out or struggling with conversation – has been linked to cognitive decline and dementia.

But despite being a significant health issue only two million people actually wear a hearing aid and enjoy the benefits of better hearing.

Many people just put up with hearing difficulties because they don’t want to be seen wearing a hearing aid or don’t realise that things could be better. They miss out on conversations and their family and friends can become frustrated as they have to repeat themselves time and again, or turn up the television volume until it is unbearable for others in the room.

In recognition to this the Lyric hearing aid was developed by ear nose and throat specialists, engineers and audiologists in the USA. So by being invisible the hearing aid tackled the biggest problem for people with hearing loss in the market. But the Lyric also combats some of the main issues found by people that wear traditional hearing aids:

• They don’t want to have to change batteries
• They would like to be able to wear them all the time
• They want hearing aids to sound natural and clear
• As the Lyric hearing aid is fitted within the ear canal it is 100% invisible and as it sits close to the ear drum and uses the anatomy of your ear – the sound quality is superb. Also it is completely safe to stay in the ear canal for extended periods of time – so you don’t have to remove it to shower, exercise or sleep you just come to us back every few months to get a new one fitted. Each time your device is replaced, you will be provided with the latest up to-date Lyric technology.

So why not try it for yourself?

Take the Lyric online hearing test now to identify if you have any issues with understanding speech within a noisy environment, which is often a symptom of hearing loss. As hearing degrades, the ability to localise sounds (distinguish or focus on one particular sound from a specific direction within a noisy environment) is often lost and so can provide a good indicator of the current level of impairment. Accordingly, should Our Online Hearing Test confirm the possibility of hearing loss, we recommend that you consult with a Cubex hearing professional for more information about your condition and to receive an appropriate solution like the Phonak Lyric Hearing aid.

The test should take a couple of minutes to complete and will enable you to take positive action should a hearing impairment become apparent. For best results we recommend the use of headphones rather than computer speakers and that the test is undertaken in a quiet area where there is minimum background noise.

As natural hearing abilities can vary across ages and genders, we do request this information to make the hearing test as accurate as possible, however we do not store these details and won’t distribute them to any third parties without your permission.

It’s all about precision fitting. After closely examining your ear canal and ruling out any contra-indications, we place the Lyric into your ear canal, close to the ear drum. Due to the deep and precise placement – Lyric can’t be seen from any angle at anytime.
Because Lyric is placed near your ear drum the sounds you hear are very natural. The ability to locate sound in your environment is enhanced making it easier to follow conversation in group situations.
If you are a candidate and ready to explore if Lyric could benefit you, we can fit you on the day. Every Cubex patient has the option of test driving Lyric for a period of 30 days before deciding if it is a long term solution for you. Once inserted, you walk out of our practice experiencing immediate benefits. You are free to get on with life, without the restrictions, stress and exhaustion imposed by hearing loss.

Once fitted, your Cubex Audiologist will be in regular contact with you ensuring that you are comfortable and ready to answer any questions.

The Lyric can last up to 120 days so there is no need to remove the Lyric, nor is there a need to insert batteries. It is completely effortless. Once you are due for and fresh Lyric, simply come back to see us and we will replace the Lyric with a brand new device.
Lyric can be worn for months at a time. However, individual replacement needs will vary as device battery life is subject to individual ear conditions. On average, patients will be required to return to Cubex approximately 5 times a year for replacement devices. However, if you are away on holiday and require attention, we will help you locate a qualified Lyric Practitioner to ensure you are looked after.
Lyric is programmed to your exact hearing loss, but if you need to you can adjust the volume yourself, switch the devices into sleep mode or turn it off. These options vary per patient. Some patients never switch off their Lyrics, especially if it helps with masking tinnitus (ringing in the ears). The remote for adjustment is called a Soundlync. It is extremely discrete and resembles a key ring.
With Lyric you can use the phone in exactly the same way as someone without a hearing loss as because of the placement of Lyric you can hold the phone directly to your ear and the signal will not be affected by the phone.
Yes, one of the benefits of Lyric’s placement is that it can be worn while talking on the mobile phone or home phone. In fact, Lyric can be worn during your daily activities – such as sleeping, showering, exercising, and using headphones.
Headphones can be used without the added complication of using extra gadgets. So long as you use normal headphones which do not extend far down into the ear canal, you will be able to use headphones with your Lyric hearing aid in place. (Standard iPod® earphones may be used)
Yes. It is safe to fly while wearing Lyric.
No. Lyric’s metal components are too small to set off metal detectors.
A common complaint of hearing aid users is whistling, which can be both distracting and embarrassing for the person who is wearing them. This whistling noise is called feedback. Feedback happens when sound coming out of the hearing aids receiver gets back into the microphone and is reprocessed. This sound goes around in a loop and gets louder causing a whistling sound.
As Lyric is placed in the ear canal and sealed against the canal walls the amount of sound that can escape is reduced – meaning whistling is a thing of the past.
Lyric must be removed before you have an MRI. Unlike an MRI, an X-ray or CT scan will not damage or dislodge the device because a magnet is not used. However, you should inform the physician and/or technician about the Lyric device. If an X-ray or CT scan of the ear or head is needed, the device may need to be removed. Let your physician know that you are wearing Lyric if you are having surgery or a medical procedure of any kind.
Lyric must be replaced at least every 120 days.  Once you are due for a fresh Lyric, simply come back to see us and we will replace the Lyric with a brand new device. For this reason, Lyric is provided on a subscription basis, meaning that you pay for a year’s, 2 years or 3 years hearing and consultancy.

One of the benefits of this is that when there are any advances or changes to the Lyric technology, you are guaranteed to have the new product. So your Lyric hearing aid will never be outdated!

In addition, you will receive regular and proficient care and support from your Cubex Lyric Practitioner. Your hearing performance will be checked on a regular basis. There will be no unexpected repair costs involved and you will always be wearing a state-of-the-art device that is in top condition.

The exterior of Lyric is made of a soft material specifically designed to contour the ear canal. This soft exterior helps to make Lyric comfortable to wear. After an initial adjustment period (anywhere between 7 and 14 days), most Lyric users no longer feel Lyric in their ear.
There might be some initial discomfort that can last for 2 days to 2 weeks.
If discomfort continues or pain develops, you should come back to see us see for an evaluation.
