When we fit you with hearing aids, we are in essence providing a brand new sensory experience for the brain. It is human nature to react with caution to any new and unfamiliar sensation. The true benefits of new hearing aids may only be realised after wearing them for some time.

It is important to use the hearing treatment technology that is right for you and more important, it must be personalised correctly, taking into account your individual abilities.

 

Different people, Different strategies

Our independence allows us to recommend hearing aid solutions that are most appropriate for you from a variety of leading manufacturers, including Oticon, Widex and Phonak.

You may be aware that processing strategies can differ between hearing aid brands. Some hearing aids manipulate the speech signal and the overall sound considerably before it is delivered to the brain. Other systems are more conservative and higher in signal fidelity.

Speech is a complex and richly embedded waveform. Overly manipulative signal processing can easily corrupt the natural intricacies of the speech signal and localisation cues of our environment. We cannot afford this compromise.

Hearing aid users need full access to all the fine details of the spoken word and to their sound environment. Therefore, preserving signal fidelity is essential. Doing so gives the brain access to every bit of information it needs to organise the world of sound, select the information that is most important and follow it over time.

Hearing on the brains terms

Hearing with 2 ears and a brain is called binaural hearing. This anatomical layout allows the brain to compare sounds coming from the left and right ears and is responsible for providing us with a spatial representation of our auditory world.

As we lose our hearing, our auditory world becomes less 3 dimensional as we lose access to these important spatial cues. What should be an organised world of sound is acoustic chaos for the individual with hearing loss. Trying to make sense of the listening environment often leaves the person with hearing loss feeling exhausted.

If you have a hearing loss, it makes sense to wear hearing aids on both ears.  You will be able to locate sound with ease, you will hear more naturally and in 3D and conversation will be effortless.

It’s not just about audibility; it’s about creating order out of acoustic chaos!

At Cubex, hearing care is not just about making sounds audible. Improving hearing depends on so much more.  Keeping speech and spatial cues as natural as possible or “brain friendly” and reducing listening effort is key.

Where we are today

In the past, research and development of hearing aid technology focused primarily on making things audible and managing noise. Processing chips were not fast or efficient enough to restore spatial hearing.

Today, a variety of technological innovations has made it possible to support the natural spatial processes of the brain. Devices used in our hearing rehabilitation use the latest breakthrough in microprocessor design and technology, not to indiscriminately raise the volume of what you hear, but to sharpen the focus of what you hear.

Years of research has also enabled the development of hearing aids that communicate with one another through wireless technology.  This means that hearing aids fitted to the right and left ears work as one central processing unit, constantly comparing information and ensuring that the natural binaural effect of hearing is recreated.  This in turn provides the brain with and organised, spatial representation of the auditory world.

This organised representation makes it easier for the brain to select and follow information of interest. So you’re better able to hone in on a conversation in a wall of party noise, and shift attention from one voice to another as you choose, like nature intended.

  • Our aim at Oticon is to offer real and significant improvements in each and every new product we introduce. This pace of continuous innovation relies on a solid foundation of research, often aiming beyond 10 years from now.

    Some improvements are quickly applied and launched, while others do not appear until 10-15 years later. This timeframe might seem long, but it enables us to devise innovations that drive the market and ensure discreet and aesthetically appealing instruments with optimal functionality.

    Developing and producing a hearing device chip is complicated and costly. On average, it takes three years and costs millions of US dollars from initial idea to final prototype. This does not deter us. Instead of resorting to standard chips, we have chosen to produce our own because they enable us to develop hearing solutions that are customised to user needs and significantly outperform third- party developed hearing device chips. Based on our end-user research, we continuously search for new algorithms that can provide true benefits for the user in future hearing solutions.     Our latest generation quad-core signal processing platform, Inium, facilitates our most stable and power-efficient binaural audiology ever. Making it possible for two hearing instruments to communicate continuously and seamlessly, Inium is the first platform that truly supports the brain’s entire process of making sense of sound.

    Our Oticon hearing devices are built to withstand daily wear and tear. Every time a new solution is introduced, a significant amount of hours and manpower will have been invested in testing internal and external components.   • Our Widex products reflect the long tradition of Danish design, with an emphasis on quality as well as individualism and experimentation with new technology.

    We invest heavily in research and development to ensure that we remain innovative. And we cooperate not just with experts but, more importantly – you. This helps us use technology to create the most natural sound.

    The microchips in Widex newest hearing aids contain more than 10 million components. Just about 10 years ago, a hearing aid contained only 200,000 components.

    Our hearing aids are produced in the most environmentally friendly way possible – all our research, development and production take place locally in Denmark. Our environmentally-friendly headquarters, complete with solar cells and an on-site windmill, makes us the first CO2 neutral hearing aid manufacturer.

    A complete overall listening experience

    A supreme sound experience requires a high dynamic range to have as few artefacts as possible. In Widex UNIQUE, we have increased the input dynamic range so that it can deliver up to 113dB SPL linearly and lowered the noise floor to 5dB SPL- so users can hear important soft sounds but also louder sounds without distortion. The key to this are the four A/D converters in UNIQUE.

    The best wind noise reduction in the industry

    For users to truly enjoy being outdoors, it is essential that that they can hear clearly no matter the conditions. The Wind Noise Attenuation system in UNIQUE provides users with documented improvement in hearing speech and environmental sounds in the presence of wind noise.

    The wind noise reduction algorithm in UNIQUE cleverly detects, separates and subtracts wind noise.

    Distinct sound classes based on real-life measurements

    We have devised a completely new, precise processing system to give users significantly improved sound in every sound environment. WIDEX UNIQUE™ Sound Class technology divides listening environments into distinct sound classes.

    It searches for specific characteristics in the incoming sound and determines whether prominent speech is present. When prominent speech is present, the system targets audibility; when there is no prominent speech, it targets comfort.

    In many research projects in cooperation with leading international universities, we at Phonak work on innovations in the fields of hearing research, signal processing and communication technology, as well as acoustics or materials. With our continuous efforts to find new solutions, we manage to achieve one of the highest innovation rates of the industry.
